The story of the Swedish group Umeå Small Band began in the late 70's when the members Niklas Munter (bass, vocals), Steffe (guitar), Lars Eklund (guitar, vocals), Claes Björnberg (organ), Matte (drums) formed the band Rikets Affärer (info @ Puntipset / Progg.se), they released only one single entitled "Berlin / Mitt Enda Liv" in 1979 who had a mix of powerpop and symphonic rock influences in the vein of bands like Råg I Ryggen, Kaipa, Miklagård and Trettioåriga Kriget. The band split-up in 1980 and the beginning of Umeå Small Band would later take form.
Umeå Small Band did their debut on the 1981 compilation 6 x 2 with the 2 songs "Kronofogden & Det finns ingen hjälp att få" more info about this release at: The Corroseum
Their first release was the single Utanför / Nu vill jag vá (1982), and was by far not as heavy as their earlier 2 songs "Kronofogden & Det finns ingen hjälp att få". The single was recorded in Studio Tonteknink and produced by Pelle Henricsson / USB with line-up: Niklas Munter - Vocals / Bass, Lars Eklund - Guitars / Vocals and Claes Björnberg - Drums / Piano. In the song "Utanför" the lyrics are about the man going to work and has nothing else to do, unseen for the world around. The point in this song is that people should take care of those who has difficulty to be recognised by others, at work or in the daily life. "Nu vill jag va'" are just about a man who want to be in the same bed as some girl instead of working at the factory.
In 1983 they recorded their second single "På Väg / Älvornas Bal" under the shortened name "Small Band". The song "På Väg" are about to always be "on the way" but never know what the end destination is. "Älvornas Bal" simple translates to "Fairy Ball". This was their last release and the members would later go seperate ways, Claes Björnberg (who also sent me the rips, thanks!) are still living in Umeå, Niklas and Lars moved to Stockholm.
